The Complete Guide of What to Wear for Family Photos

The hardest part of family photoshoots isn’t the photography itself, but the moment you stand in front of the closet and ask: ‘What should we wear?’. In the following guide, I’ve compiled my winning tips for coordinating colors, choosing flattering fabrics, and matching the location – so you can arrive at the photoshoot relaxed and…

1. Forget “Uniforms” – Think “Color Palette”

The trend used to be dressing everyone in jeans and a white T-shirt. It’s nice, but it’s a bit dated and flattens the picture. The secret to a rich, interesting photograph is coordination, not matching.

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same thing, choose 2-3 colors that blend beautifully together. For example:

  • Earthy Tones: Mustard, olive green, beige, and brown (works amazingly for outdoor photos in Israel, summer and winter).
  • Soft Pastels: Light blue, antique pink, cream, and light gray.
  • Urban Contrast: Dark denim, black, white, and a touch of strong color (like burgundy).

2. The Location Sets the Tone

Where are we shooting? The environment is an integral part of the photo, and the clothes need to “talk” to it.

  • Beach Photos (in Palmachim, Herzliya, and surroundings): Light, flowing fabrics, bright colors. It’s best to avoid heavy shoes, we’re going to be barefoot some of the time!
  • Nature/Forest Photos (e.g., in a local grove): Boots, knitwear, and layers. Warm colors work wonderfully against the green background.
  • Urban Photos (Neve Tzedek, Old Jaffa): Here you can “dress up” more. Tailored jackets, statement dresses, and even more vibrant colors that stand out against the walls and graffiti.

3. Kids’ Comfort is the Key to a Perfect Photo

This is the most important tip you’ll read here. An uncomfortable child is a child who won’t smile (or will cry).

  • Avoid itchy fabrics, irritating tags, or clothes that are too tight.
  • Pay attention to shoes – if you bought new shoes for the shoot, let the kids wear them around the house first.
  • Photographer’s Tip: Always bring a change of clothes for the little ones. Dripping ice cream or a tumble in the mud is part of the adventure.

4. Be Careful with Large Prints and Logos

We want the focus to be on your faces, the connection, and the emotion, not on a big “Nike” logo or a huge Mickey Mouse print that draws the eye. Subtle prints (like small flowers or delicate checks) are great and add interest, but large logos or prominent text on the shirt make the photo look less timeless.

5. Use Layers and Accessories

How do you turn a simple look into a magazine-worthy look? You add layers. A vest, an open denim jacket, a beautiful scarf, a hat, or an interesting necklace – all of these add depth to the photo and allow us to change the look in seconds without completely changing clothes. This is also an excellent solution for the volatile Israeli weather during transitional seasons.

In Summary: Be You

The clothes should represent who you are. If you are a jeans and sneakers family, don’t show up in evening wear—it will look unnatural. My goal is to capture your authentic and beautiful moments, and the clothes are just the scenery for your story.

Still undecided in front of the closet? As part of my photography package, I am always available for styling consultation before the session. Send me pictures via WhatsApp and together we will build the perfect look for your family.
