You’ve got the ring, you’ve set the date, and now comes the fun part: telling the world! Your Save The Date photoshoot or engagement session is meant to be a joyful celebration of your connection.

Yet, for many couples, the idea of stepping in front of a professional camera brings a rush of anxiety. You worry about posing, what to wear, and whether the photos will look “too cheesy.”

As your photographer, I’m here to tell you that these anxieties are built on myths. Your session is not a stiff performance, it’s an authentic celebration of your unique love story.

Here are the top 5 myths I hear from engaged couples, and how we bust them together:

1. Myth: “We Have to Know Exactly How to Pose”

The Truth: You absolutely do not need to be a professional model. In fact, the most beautiful engagement photos happen when you stop trying to pose.

Most couples feel awkward initially that’s normal! The stiffness only lasts for the first five minutes.

My Solution: My role is to be your guide. I won’t just tell you to “stand there and smile.” I give you easy, actionable directions that create natural interaction. Think of it as guided movement, not posing. I might ask you to walk, whisper something funny in your partner’s ear, or simply slow dance all these actions generate genuine moments that are captured beautifully. The key is focusing on each other, not the camera.

2. Myth: “We Have to Dress Up Extravagantly (Like a Wedding)”

The Truth: Save The Date photos are often best when they feel relaxed and authentic to your style. While looking polished is great, wearing clothing that is uncomfortable or dramatically different from your usual wardrobe will make you look stiff.

My Solution: I recommend two simple outfit changes:

  1. A “Smart Casual” Look: This is what you would wear for a nice dinner out. Think coordinated colors, flowy fabrics, and clothes you feel great in.
  2. A “Cozy/Casual” Look: Jeans, a nice sweater, or simple layers. This is great for cozy, intimate shots or highly active locations like the beach or a forest trail.

Pro Tip: Choose colors that complement your chosen backdrop—for example, avoid green if we are shooting deep in a forest!

3. Myth: “The Photoshoot Must Be at Sunset (Golden Hour)”

The Truth: The “Golden Hour” (the hour before sunset) is famous for a reason it produces incredible, soft light. However, it’s not the only option, and sometimes it doesn’t fit your schedule.

My Solution: My job is to find beautiful light no matter the time of day.

  • Morning Light: The soft light shortly after sunrise is stunning, often less windy, and perfect for unique city shots in places like Old city Jerusalem before the crowds arrive.
  • Shaded Areas: If we need to shoot mid-afternoon, finding a shaded area in a park or forest, provides beautiful, even light that is incredibly flattering.

We will choose a time and location that works best for your energy level and vision, not just the clock.

4. Myth: “We Need to Bring a Lot of Props”

The Truth: While a single prop can be fun, a suitcase full of chalkboards, signs, and balloons will only distract from the main subject: your connection. If the photo session looks like a staged performance, it loses its authenticity.

My Solution: Let’s focus on one or two items that hold genuine meaning to your relationship. Maybe it’s your dog, a vintage record, or a blanket for snuggling. These personal touches add context to your story without becoming a visual distraction.

Your genuine nature and shared story are far more important than any prop. The final images should speak volumes to the friends and family who know you best. Together, we will focus on capturing your real vibe and bringing your unique narrative to life through our session.

5. Myth: “I Need a Picture-Perfect Home for an At-Home Shoot”

The Truth: Many couples avoid an in-home session because they feel their house isn’t “pretty enough.” An in-home session is about capturing your authentic life, not showcasing interior design.

My Solution: In-home lifestyle photography is ideal for capturing cozy, intimate moments and it’s perfect if you have pets or kids who are most comfortable at home. We usually only need two well-lit areas. Don’t worry about the mess! I’ll help you quickly clear the frame of distracting clutter, and we will focus on the light and the love.
